Video poker is one of the most strategically rewarding games in any casino. Full-pay Jacks or Better, the standard benchmark, returns 99.54% with optimal strategy, making it competitive with blackjack for best house odds. Unlike blackjack, video poker is a solo game requiring no interaction with a dealer or other players. The key is choosing full-pay variants and learning the correct strategy for each machine type.

| Variant | Full-Pay RTP | Distinguishing Feature | Strategy Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jacks or Better | 99.54% | Standard: minimum pair of Jacks to win | Medium; good starting point |
| Deuces Wild | 100.76% | All 2s are wild cards; positive EV | Higher; wild card strategy differs significantly |
| Double Bonus | 99.17% | Bonus payouts for four-of-a-kinds | Medium–High |
| Double Double Bonus | 98.98% | Higher bonus payouts for specific four-of-a-kinds | High; high variance |
Note on Deuces Wild: Full-pay Deuces Wild has a theoretical RTP over 100% with perfect strategy. In practice, perfect strategy is extremely difficult to execute, and online casinos rarely offer full-pay versions. The 100.76% figure is the mathematical maximum, not a realistic return.
A full-pay machine pays the maximum theoretical return for that variant. For Jacks or Better, full pay means a 9/6 paytable: paying 9 coins for a full house and 6 for a flush per coin wagered. Short-pay machines (8/5, 7/5, etc.) reduce these payouts, directly lowering the overall RTP. Always check the paytable before playing.
Video poker rewards players who understand the paytable in front of them. Our reviews walk through each variant’s rules and scoring hands so you know what you are looking at before you sit down to play.

A no-wild-cards draw poker game named after the historic Dead Man’s Hand, where landing four of a kind in aces, eights or sevens earns a payout well above the usual quad rate.

A Jacks or Better variant that rebalances the pay table to reward straights, flushes and full houses more generously than a standard machine, giving mid-tier hands extra pull.

A wild-deuce variant where every 2 substitutes for any card needed, and the pay table singles out hands built from all four deuces for a standout payout of up to 4,000 credits.

A Jacks or Better foundation with one deliberate change, four of a kind hands, aces especially, return an enhanced payout that rewards players for holding out for quads.

A close relative of Bonus Poker that spreads its four of a kind bonus evenly across every rank rather than favouring aces, with a max-coin Royal Flush reaching 4,000 coins.
See Review
The archetypal wild-deuce game, where all four 2s substitute for any card, three of a kind becomes the minimum paying hand, and a max-bet Royal Flush pays 4,000 coins.

Takes the Bonus Poker idea further, four aces alone return 160-to-1 on the wager, with the rest of the four of a kind ladder also lifted above a standard Jacks or Better pay table.

Builds on Double Bonus Poker with kicker-dependent quad bonuses, certain four of a kind hands pay extra when paired with a specific fifth card, on top of the usual Double or Nothing round.

Concentrates its bonus payouts on four of a kind hands built entirely from court cards, Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces, while everything else follows a familiar draw poker pattern.

A sibling to Double Double Jackpot Poker that rewards four of a kind hands in Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces, paired with the same Double or Nothing duel against the dealer after any win.

A hybrid that layers slot machine bonus mechanics onto a five card poker base, with fruit symbol payouts, a building cherry meter, and a joker wild sitting alongside the usual hold and draw decisions.

The template every other RTG poker variant riffs on, no wild cards, a pair of jacks or better as the minimum paying hand, and a full 4,000 credit jackpot on a max-bet Royal Flush.

Adds a single joker to the deck as a wild card capable of completing straight flushes, four of a kinds, and the game’s headline Sequential Royal Flush.

Another wild-deuce variant, distinguished by a pay table that leans especially hard into four-deuce hands, on top of the familiar high-low Double or Nothing round.

Introduces a spinning Mystery Bonus wheel that lands on a random poker hand each round, awarding a separate bonus payout if you manage to match it during play.

A genuinely different draw structure, two cards are dealt face up first, then a choice between two three-card stacks decides the rest of your hand, adding a real decision before any discard happens.

Every 7 in the deck acts as a wild, capable of building bonus-paying five of a kind and Wild Royal hands, with four natural sevens forming the game’s standout payout.
See ReviewUnlike slots, video poker outcomes are shaped by the decisions you make after the deal, which hand you hold and which cards you discard. Variants such as Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild and Bonus Poker each reward slightly different strategies, and the paytable printed on the machine is the fastest way to judge whether a specific version is worth your time.
Each variant changes the winning hand rankings or introduces wild cards, which shifts the optimal strategy. Jacks or Better rewards a pair of jacks or higher, while Deuces Wild treats every 2 as a wild card and pays out on different hand strengths as a result.
It can be, because correct strategy play narrows the house edge more than slots typically allow. That said, the actual return depends entirely on the paytable of the specific machine and the operator offering it.
Most experienced players use one. A strategy chart tells you the statistically correct card to hold in every situation for a given paytable, removing the guesswork from each hand.
