Pontoon: Both Dealer Cards Hidden, and What That Removes

Standard blackjack shows one dealer card and hides the other. Pontoon hides both until the very end, and that single change removes the small edge of information players normally use to guide every decision.

The visible dealer up card is the foundation of blackjack strategy. Correct play is expressed as your total against that card, and without it there is nothing to play against. Every hit, stand and double decision here is made against an unknown total rather than a partial read.

That is the opposite arrangement to Face Up 21, where both dealer cards are visible, and comparing the two makes the trade explicit. One game gives you complete information; this one gives you none.

The game compensates with genuine flexibility. You can hit, stand or double down at any point in the hand, not just on your first two cards, which is considerably more permissive than standard blackjack. That means a hand can be developed gradually and a double can be committed after seeing how it progresses.

Building a five card hand without going bust also carries its own dedicated payout, rewarding patience over an early stand. That bonus changes when hitting a marginal total is worthwhile, since a hand approaching five cards has value beyond its total.

Those two rules work together. Being able to double at any point and being rewarded for long hands both encourage playing a hand out rather than settling early, which is a coherent design given that you have no dealer information to settle against.

Splitting pairs is still available, but doing so without any read on the dealer's holding adds an extra layer of risk compared with a standard table where one dealer card is always visible. Committing a second stake blind is a more serious decision than committing it against a visible six.

Pontoon suits players who enjoy playing on instinct and find the strategy-chart precision of standard blackjack mechanical. The flexible doubling and five card bonus give it a genuinely different feel rather than being a harsher version of the same game.

Anyone who relies on a strategy chart should recognise it is unusable here, since every entry depends on a dealer up card this game does not show. Playing Pontoon well means thinking about your own hand's development rather than the matchup.
